My Story

While pursuing my business degree at the University of Memphis and learning about finance, investments, insurance it cultivated a desire to work toward a career helping others with their planning. I admired professionals who helped others plan for their financial future.

During my senior year at University of Memphis, I interviewed several large financial services companies for roles in financial services. Upon graduating college in 1986, I spent the next 5 years working for a global financial services company. I worked in risk management, asset allocation and many of the insurance and investment products and strategies used throughout the financial services industry. To serve my clients the best of my ability, I went back to school and obtained two designations - The American College - CHARTERED LIFE UNDERWRITER (CLU®) and REGISTERED HEALTH UNDERWRITER (RHU®).

In 1990, to advise my clients more unbiased, I launched Roop Financial Services, Inc.. This allowed me to serve my clients more independently with respect to recommendations, solutions, and planning. Through this process, I learned helping people make decisions about their retirement finances was what I was called to do with my life.  Today, I remain committed to sharing knowledge and helping educate others. In 2017, I lost both of my parents within a few months of one another.  As a result of this, I learned first-hand the necessity of estate planning. Later that year, my mother-in-law suffered a stroke causing the need for long term care. While assisting her in finding the best options for her home care and later, facility care, she was able to receive the best care for her and her circumstances. Fortunately, her long-term care policy protected her assets from spend down, I’m grateful that I was able to advise my family during these life altering situations. This is what financial advisor leaders do. We show up, lean in, listen, plan together, and often laugh and cry together. We don't just offer investment advice or even wisdom, but most importantly, we offer ourselves.  I work alongside my team of CFP® and ChFC® advisors to provide my clients with a holistic return on life financial plan.

While I'm at capacity with the number of people I can work with through Roop Financial Services, I hope I can be of value to you through the various Free Resources available on this site as well as our two CFP's available within my firm.

LEARN MORE ABOUT ME

I love what I do and who I work with - advising clients is my passion. Cindy and I reside in Germantown, TN and stay very busy with the activities of our daughter and son.  We enjoy traveling with clients and friends, community bicycling events, managing our farm and cheering on Mississippi State Bulldogs, Arkansas Razorbacks and, of course, The University of Memphis Tigers.

What are your hobbies?
I've been passionate about farming since my teenage years while helping my grandfather on his farm. I'm also a road cyclist, fierce book reader and avid fly fisherman. My highest calling is being Dad to my son, Tyler, and daughter, Olivia, and proud husband to Cindy of 34 years.

What's your most useful skill outside of financial planning?
Farming and building things.  I enjoy growing blueberries and harvesting honey from my 3 beehives. The farm has taught me discipline, patience, arithmetic, and a lot of horse sense. It also helps me appreciate my office more after returning from the weekend on the farm.

What's are interesting fun facts about yourself?
I’ve completed a century bike ride and several Triathlons back in my early days. My mother was an artist. Because of her love for art passed down to me, she instilled in me the love for drawings.  I’ve done a few pencil portraits, but feel like my God given talents are finance and investments.
